This backyard had potential - good size, mature trees, French doors opening right onto the grass - but nothing to actually step out onto. No transition from inside to out. Just a door that opened to nowhere. That's a pretty common situation out here in Eagle Crest, and it's exactly the kind of thing we love solving.

We built a multi-level cedar deck that steps down from the house to the yard in two tiers. The design keeps it low-profile and grounded, which fits the surroundings well. No towering railings, no complicated structure - just clean, wide platforms that feel like a natural extension of the home. The wide plank boards run horizontal and the step edges are thick and solid, giving the whole thing a substantial, well-built look.

The framing and fastening work is the part most people don't think about until it matters. Getting the ledger connection right, making sure every board sits tight with consistent spacing, nailing off the stair treads so there's zero flex - that's what separates a deck that lasts from one that starts wobbling in two seasons. Central Oregon's temperature swings are real, and wood moves. We account for that from the start.

Once the stain went on, the wood really came to life. That warm cedar tone ties the whole thing into the dark siding and the natural landscape around it. The finish also does important work protecting the wood from UV exposure and moisture - both of which are factors you have to think about seriously out here. A good penetrating stain on fresh cedar goes a long way toward keeping the deck looking sharp for years without constant upkeep.

The finished deck gave this home a proper outdoor living space - somewhere to actually spend time, not just step over. Wide enough for furniture, low enough to feel connected to the yard, and built to handle whatever Central Oregon weather throws at it.
